Backstory is an infoshop and small used bookshop supported by a small, sustainably-mined cafe serving in the spirit of slow food. Among the ideas at the core of Backstory, is the belief that a well knit community is a powerful force for social change at every level. Creating community is, in and of itself, positive social change. We believe that while not everyone shares the same background, there is something from each of our backstories, that leads to a place where a short bridge can connect our purpose and enrich our lives. Backstory is the place to connect individuals and groups who may not otherwise have the opportunity to interface, yet share the same core values of mutual respect and working for the common good. By becoming a supporting member of the vibrant independent cultural infrastructure that already exists in Chicago, Backstory is a hub for activity that welcomes a diverse community. We are specifically interested in gathering the Woodlawn, UofC campus, Hyde Park and Kenwood communities.
