WHAT: Film Screening "BLACK GOLD", sponsored by Chicago Fair Trade
WHEN: Thursday, February 19th 2008 @ 6pm
WHERE: Backstory Cafe 6100 S. Blackstone Ave in the Experimental Station
Come for the screening and fair-trade coffee and chocolate. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Keith Freeman, a member of Chicago Fair Trade.
BLACK GOLD (2006) is a cinematic journey uncovering the world of coffee trade from the struggling Ethiopian bean grower to your coffee cup.
Directed by Marc Francis and Nick Francis, this documentary explores the impact of the global coffee trade. Where the profit margins of huge multinational coffee companies continue to rise; prices paid for coffee harvests have reached an all time low, forcing farmers in some of the world's poorest countries to abandon their once bountiful fields.
Tadesse Meskela is one man on a mission to bring a fair trade market to the more than 70,000 struggling Ethiopian farmers whom he represents. This seemingly Sisyphean endeavor takes him on an international journey to some of the biggest coffee marketplaces in the world, where he discovers that there are no easy solutions for the trade issues facing his impoverished countrymen.
BLACK GOLD is a moving and eye-opening look into the $80 billion global coffee industry, whose spoils are sparsely shared with the farmers who make it all possible.

WHAT: Supper Club, "The Hajj" with guest chef Ataullah Arain
WHEN: Thursday, January 8th, 7:30 pm
WHERE: Backstory Cafe
The Annual Pilgrimage to Mecca (the Hajj)is one of the most important dates on the Muslim calendar and an unforgetable event in the life of every pilgrim. Around the world, returning pilgrims earn the title "Hajji" and are greeted with garlands, celebrated at gatherings and asked to share their stories over great food.
Join us at Backstory to welcome a few (of the 3 million!)returning Hajjis and learn a bit about the Hajj, history and experience.
About our guest chef:
Among the many well kept secrets in Hyde Park is the culinary skill of Ataullah Arain, who has been gathering family and friends around his table for over 30 years. Dr. Arains love for cooking began as a young medical student in England, where his native Pakistani cuisine was so hard to find he took matters into his own hands. Through diligent trial and error and the encouragement of classmates, his craft was slowly perfected. A reasonable (however undocumented) conclusion: Dr.(Hajji)A.Arain helped bring "biryani" to the Brits...and now to the rest of us, come and enjoy!
Make your reservation today to join us for a family style meal and
conversation.
Supper Club is $15.00 per person for a fixed menu created by our guest chef and usually includes starters, entree, dessert, tea/coffee.
Seating is limited, RSVP to

*WHAT: *"Crime of the Century: Leopold and Loeb and the Murder of Bobby Franks"
(A walking history tour of relevant sites!! and screening of Hitchcock's "Rope").*
WHEN: Sunday, November 2 and Sunday, November 9 at 2:00 PM
WHERE: Starting at the corner of 49th and Ellis in Kenwood ending @ Backstory Cafe for screening.
WHO: "Pocket Guide to Hell" tours with tour guide Paul Durica
HOW LONG: Approximately ninety minutes for tour, and an eighty minute screening.
COST: Free!!! (Bring $ for cider, coffee, and pumpkin treats @ Backstory during screening)
On May 21, 1924, in the city of Chicago, a young boy went
missing. He was walking in the late afternoon between the
Harvard School, where he was a popular student, and his house,
one of Kenwoods many mansions. Later that night his father,
Jacob Franks, received a phone call informing him that his
son, Bobby, had been kidnaped but could be ransomed for ten
thousand dollars. The next morning, south of the city, near
Wolf Lake, a pump man for the American Maize CO saw a human
foot sticking out from the edge of a culvert. Bobby had been
beaten to death with a blunt object. Suspicion fell on the
boys teachers but then the chance discovery of a pair of
glasses with a unique tortoiseshell frame led police to
question the nineteen year old son of a shipping magnate. The
young man, an amateur ornithologist, claimed hed been at the
Lake the week prior, looking for cranes. He had an alibi for
the night of the kidnapping, a friend, also a resident of
Kenwood, the son of the vice president of Sears-Roebuck. But
suddenly there were all these thingsthe glasses, an Underwood
typewriter, a green touring car, a length of rope, a chisel
with a taped handle, a bottle of hydrochloric acid, another of
chloroform, a checkered stockingthat traced a series of
encounters disproving the story told by Nathan Leopold and
Richard Loeb. Had these young men of wealth and education
killed Franks, as they claimed, for the thrill of it? Could
famed death penalty opponent Clarence Darrow save them from
the gallows? What is the enduring legacy of what the press
dubbed the Crime of the Century?
Pocket Guide to Hell invites you to return to the scene of the
crime. Join us for a tour of the Kenwood neighborhood that
will visit, among other places, the site of the kidnaping,
the Harvard school, the Franks house, and, of course, the
houses of Leopold and Loeb, in order to restore a sense of
contingency and chance to a long ago event and to reflect upon
its continued effect on a neighborhood and an issue of
national importance. The tour concludes with a special
screening of Alfred Hitchcocks "Rope" and refreshments for sale
at Backstory Café (6100 S Blackstone).
There are fifteen slots for each date. *Please email Paul
Durica (pgdurica@hotmail.com)* your preferred date and the
number of people in your party. Slots will be filled on a
first come, first served basis.

WHAT: Film Screening of "The Garden"
WHEN: Thursday, November 13th, 7pm.
WHERE: Backstory Cafe, 6100 S Blackstone Ave. in Woodlawn
The Garden, by director Scott Hamilton Kennedy, won a Sterling award for best U.S. feature. The Sterling Feature Jury praised the film for its tenacity in storytelling in the face of injustice, and the filmmakers singular vision in bringing a gripping, dramatic, and important story to the public eye. The Garden has raw emotion, visceral energy, and nail-biting twists and turns. It unravels a complex and layered tale of the destruction of Americas largest urban farm that must not be forgotten.
______________________________________________________________________
WHEN: Sunday, August 31st. Begins at 4pm leaving from BACKSTORY CAFE, 6100 S. Blackstone Ave.
WHAT: Dérive and Film Screening: We'll go on the walk then return for the
potluck around dinnertime and watch "A Continuing Responsibility," a film about
Saul Alinsky's organizing tactics, which had a major impact on Woodlawn. Bring your
dish at 4 and we'll store it at the cafe while we walk.
Dérive: The Situationist concept meaning aimless walk that follows the whim of the moment. The goal of the dérive is to break from the monotony and emptiness of daily routine, and look at the city in an entirely radical way in an emotional
way, in a bodily way. To take notice is to break from the control implicit in the urban city's design. For more on Situationism: http://www.nothingness.org/SI/
On our dérive we will walk through various landscapes of Woodlawn in groups of two or three, beginning at Backstory Café. Bring whatever goal you wish to fulfill, but perhaps keep in mind the goal of noticing how certain streets, buildings, and nooks resonate with states of mind and behaviors.
